PC or Linux Based Surveillance System?
One of the reacquiring questions that we are asked at PCSurveillance is should I purchase a PC or Linux Based Surveillance System. Purchasing a Linux based Surveillance System may save you a few dollars in the short run, but your best option is to purchase a PC Based Surveillance System allowing you to evolve with the ever changing technology. Below are a few points that we believe are key to consider.
• Flexibility – PC Based units offer more flexibility in several different areas.
– Storage (more than one or two data drives)
– Remote access (Client Software, Internet Explorer Browser, Central Monitoring Software and Windows Mobile Devices)
– Software added features (adding an IP camera for example)
– Ease of use (a familiar mouse/keyboard, not a remote control).
• Total Cost of Ownership –
– One Year Warranty – This gives you less maintenance cost over the life of the system
– 32 Channel Systems – We offer several types of 32 channel systems where as a standalone only comes in a maximum of 16. You would need two 16 channel systems to cover what one 32 channel system would do.
• Ease of Repairs – Most problems can be diagnosed with remote access. With an accurate diagnosis, a determination can be made on the course of action, whether it would be a software update, an onsite repair or a hot swap replacement of the whole machine.
• Length of Service – A PC Based DVR can evolve in the field due to the ability of a modular build.
– If you need to change the type of capture card for any reason (live viewing or more channels), you just change out the card. If you are on a Standalone system, you would need to purchase a new system.
– Adjust your storage options as needs change.
– Only repair what is needed, not lose the whole machine due to obsolescence beyond the warranty.
